Hybrid between Horse-chestnut, Aesculus hippocastanum and Red Buckeye, A. pavia. Deep pinkish-red flowers followed by smaller, less spiny fruit. Leaves with 5-7 leaflets, often crinkly in appearance. Height 18-25m, frequently smaller.

Planted in parks and gardens as shade and ornamental tree.

Similar: Aesculus x carnea 'Briotti' is a garden cultivar with glossier leaves and brighter red flowers.
