Flowering: January-April. Deciduous shrub or small tree. Introduced.

White flowers in loose spikes, appearing at same time as leaves. Glossy pale green leaves. Twigs are thornless, green then reddish. Globular fruits, yellow or red, not formed every year. Rarely suckers.

Hedgerows and gardens. Introduced, can persist in hedgerows.

Similar: Blackthorn, P. spinosa.
Very thorny. Flowers are smaller and appear before leaves. Usually flowers 2-3 weeks later than Cherry Plum.
