Branched, one-sided flowerheads with glossy, +/- purplish, many-flowered spikelets. Narrow, hairless, finely-toothed rough leaves with short, blunt ligules. Height 30-100cms.
Often hybridises with Perennial Rye-grass, Lolium perenne

Widespread, can be frequent or locally common in fertile, +/- neutral, often damp, meadows.
