Greenish-yellow male catkins, smaller female catkins. Clusters of pendant fruit, turn brown in November. Leaves pointed, +/- pleated, sharp-toothed. Turn yellow in autumn. Smooth silver-grey bark striped brown, vertically ridged. Hard, fine-grained wood. To 25m.

Frequently planted in woods, amenity areas, roadsides, occasionally naturalised.
