Erect, stalkless catkins appear at branch tips before leaves open. Long, narrow, un-toothed leaves with down-turned margins. Dull green above, white-silky beneath. Long flexible shoots, yellow-brown when mature. Grows as large shrub or small tree, to 5m.

Planted and coppiced for basketry and in amenity areas. Damp ground, roadsides, by streams and rivers and in marshes and fens.
