Bluish-green glaucous stems to 150cm.
Brown spikelets in more/less compact inflorescence. Bract at
base appears as continuation of stem. All leaves without blades.
Creeping rhizomes.

Coastal, brackish water, dune slacks, also on saltmarshes, wet pastures. Most frequent S Irish coasts. Very occasional inland.
