Flowering July - August. Perennial. Introduced.

Clusters of small white flowers, the petals often pink-tipped. Can be confused with Elder, Sambucus nigra but the leaves have numerous narrower leaflets and leafy stipules at bases. A hairless, unbranched shrub, spreading by creeping rhizomes. Height to 180cm.

Originally introduced as a medicinal plant, now found as an escape or discard on roadsides, hedgerows and waste ground, often near habitation. Widespread but local, most frequent in central Ireland.
