Flowering June-September. Usually annual. Introduced.

Two-lipped flowers are usually dull yellowish, tinged purple. Flowers equal to or shorter than bracts and the stigma lobes are usually purple but sometimes yellow. Stems usually purplish. A variable plant that produces no chlorophyll but is parasitic on the roots of mainly Trifolium species.

Scattered distribution in Ireland usually on cultivated ground where it is often introduced with grass seed.
