Rhizomatous perennial. Garden escape. Introduced.

White or pale mauve flowers with yellow stamens. Some varieties produce poisonous small green fruit containing many seeds. Edible underground tubers. Leaves, fruit and green tubers are not edible.

Found on waste and cultivated ground, rubbish tips and coastal shingle. A fairly frequent garden discard but probably under-recorded. Usually casual and rarely persists.
