Flowering: June-August. Annual. Probably introduced.

Pale scarlet flowers with bluish-black anthers and occasionally a dark blotch at the base of the petals. The seed capsules are oblong, hairless and >2x long as wide, containing long-lived seeds. Flower stalks with close-pressed hairs. Grey-green pinnately lobed leaves. Contains latex.

Widespread but decreasing on calcareous soils on roadsides, arable land and waste ground
