Flowering time: May-September. Aquatic perennial. Native.

Dense spikes of small flowers with 4 stamens in leaf axils. Separate carpels ripen to red-brown nutlets. The oval-lanceolate floating leaves are stalked and often reddish-green. Narrower, submerged leaves are present in young plants. Very variable.

Common in shallow, acidic ponds and streams, terrestrial forms grow on mud and sphagnum moss
