Flowering: May-September. Evergreen perennial. Native.

Dense round heads of slightly fragrant pink or white flowers with 5 petals and a fine-toothed, papery calyx. The inner bracts are membranous, the outer bracts green. Forms round cushions of dark green, linear leaves with un-branched flower stems to 20cm tall.

Usually coastal on rocks, cliffs, salt marshes, coastal road banks and walls but occasionally inland in north and west Ireland on mountain ledges.
