Flowering May-July, fruiting June-August. Perennial. Native.

Tufts of slender, often drooping 3-angled stems. Leaves 2-3mm wide. Very elongated inflorescence with few-flowered pale spikelets. Upper spikelets close, lower 2-3cm+ apart. Lowest bract to 3cm, other bracts small. Diamond-shaped fruit.

Open woods, hedgebanks, roadsides, scrub, pathsides. Tolerant of all except very poor, acidic soils.
