A slender, tufted sedge with short, shiny leaves. Single male spike, broader at tip than base, short-stalked. 3-5 narrow female spikes on drooping stalks. 3 stigmas. Lowest leaf bract not over-topping male spike. Green fruit with long notched beak.

Very common in woods, hedges, shady fields, wooded river banks.
