Flowering June-September. Perennial. Native.

Very variable rush, erect or half-prostrate. To 50cm.
Curved, flattened, transversely jointed leaves. Un-jointed stems. Terminal branched clusters of dark-brownish flowers. Branches nearer vertical than horizontal. Glossy black seed capsules. Short rhizomes.

Found throughout Ireland. Abundant on wet and damp ground except in very acidic conditions. Lakesides, marshes, wet fields, roadsides, woodland tracks, dune-slacks.
