Flowering June - August. Perennial. Native.

Panicles pinkish-white to purplish-green, contracted before and after flowering. Flat rough leaves with membranous ligules, often torn and more/less rounded at tips. Creeping runners, rooting at joints. Very variable, taller growing on rich soils. 40-120cm.

Very common in wide range of habitats on dry or moist soils. Grassland, waste ground, dunes, cliffs, upper saltmarshes, ditches.
