Ovoid or globular flowerhead with greyish 1-flowered spikelets. Glumes whitish-green, keeled, broadly winged. Roughish leaves with inflated sheaths. 20-60cm.

Casual, rarely persistent on waste ground, rubbish tips, roadsides, ports. Sometimes found as a bird-seed alien in built-up areas.
