Flowering June - August. Perennial. Native.

Very slender, unbranched flowerheads with purplish-black, single-flowered spikelets. Dense tufts of greyish-green hairless, bristle-like leaves with broad sheaths. Height 10-25cm.

Found on peaty, nutrient-poor soils on moors and mountains. Mainly NW, W and SW Ireland.
