Variable, several subspecies are recognised.
Oval, usually erect, compound flowerhead with many short-stalked, +/- downy spikelets. Greyish-green, soft-downy leaves with short, blunt ligules and tubular sheaths. Height 15-80cm.

Common on grasslands and waste ground throughout Ireland.
