Loose feathery flower-heads, green or purplish spikelets with 2-4 flowers. Greyish-green leaves with rough leaf-sheaths. Long ligules, pointed, jagged. Slender stems, tufted, erect, 30-60cm. Hairless.

Widespread and abundant. Moist grassland and roadsides.

Very similar to Smooth Meadow-grass, P. pratensis
