Flowering May - July. Annual. Native.

Loose, drooping flowerheads with 1-2 wedge-shaped, many-flowered spikelets, +/- purplish when ripe. Awns to 2.4cm long. Flat, downy leaves with hairy sheaths, auricles absent, ligules 2-4mm. Floppy growth, 30-100cm tall.

Found on dry roadsides, hedgebanks and waste ground. Mainly recorded from the eastern half of Ireland.
