Flowering June - August. Perennial. Native.

Erect tufted grass, far-creeping underground rhizomes. 30-100cm. Stiff, slender flowerheads with close-set, overlapping spikelets. Flat leaves, hairless or sparsely hairy, upper surface rough. Spreads rapidly by rhizomes and root fragments.

Widespread, very common in fertile, disturbed ground. Persistent agricultural and garden weed, very difficult to eradicate.
