Flowering: July-August. Perennial. Native.

Unbranched nodding flower-spikes. 8-10 long spikelets, short-stalked. Flowers with long awns. The fairly broad yellow-green leaves are 8-12mm wide, slightly hairy, drooping. Short blunt ligules. Tufted slender stems, 50-100cm.

Common in woods and on shady banks. Also on more open ground.
