Flowers in loose spreading panicles. Spikelets are silvery-green or purple. Long flat leaves, ridged on upper sides with long lanceolate ligules. Forms large tussocks, stems 70-150cm.

Very frequent on damp ground. Woods, streamsides, damp fields.
